Day #11 - New Zealand Travel Adventure (Lanarch Castle to Te Anau)

We left Larch Castle in Dunedin after a very filling Kiwi Breakfast of eggs, toast, portabella mushroom, home fries, sausage, bacon, juice, coffee, fruit, cereals, etc. It was much more that I could eat. With our stomachs full, we checked out of the castle and drove into town to fill the tank for transit to Te Anau. We decided to drive to Queenstown to check this town out because we will be in a rush on our return from the Milford Sound and we had extra time today.

The geography changed rapidly from coastal hills to high mountains and lakes suggestive of our Rocky Mountains. Queenstown is a very active town for young people and it looks like it is mainly a skiing town in the winter time. The hills are filled with houses overlooking a lake or river and it reminds me very much of an Alpine ski community. It is not a town I would want to live in.

From Queenstown, we drove to Te Anau, a town that is near the Milford Sound that we planned to visit in the morning.

Lake Te Anaou
Lake Te Anaou is the second largest lake in New Zealand.

Our motel is the Anchorage and the room is an efficiency apartment with a jacuzzi tub. We used the jacuzzi tub but not the cooking facilities. They do have great free wireless internet and Sky TV with 50+ channels. The motel is within easy walking distance to Lake Te Anau, the second largest lake in New Zealand, and to the downtown. The town is quite small, but has the necessary restaurants, petrol stations, bars, etc.

We had a light dinner of soup and the necessary dark beer before going to bed early. We plan to go to the Milford Sound in the morning.
